BRIMBANK CHILDRENS CIRCUS PROJECT / FULL OF BEANS / ONCE UPON A CIRCUS 2010

Once Upon a Circus 2010 (ongoing)
The Brimbank Children’s Circus, Full of Beans and Once Upon a Circus included an artistic collaboration with Kids Own Publishing.
Background
Pilot project Brimbank Children’s Circus Project and the Full of Beans Project developed a circus workshop program with 120 newly arrived and refugee pre-school aged children and their parents from 2007 – 2009. Major outcomes included the establishment of a new circus space for the local community at the Sunshine West Community Centre, public performances, the development of a circus kit, a training program for playgroup leaders, an early learning and literacy curriculum and a series of small community made story books. The pilot project was a finalist in the ‘Victorian Early Years Awards’ and lauded as ‘Promising Practice Profile’ by the Australian Institute of Family Studies. Once Upon A Circus Project has been developed in response to the social development needs of newly arrived and refugee children aged 3- 5 years and their mothers who have recently settled into the Brimbank municipality. Building on the success and learnings from the Brimbank Children’s Circus Project and Full of Beans project, this next step community arts project provides a municpality wide approach to improved parent, child interactions, enhanced community learning and social development.
Using a newly established circus space which is fully equipped with circus and music gear, the Once Upon a Circus project strives to build new community groups, generate innovative community resources (story books) and provide an important intervention for poor literacy and social isolation.
